    Cardinal George issues letter urging Catholics to oppose Illinois gay marriage bill

    Chicago's Cardinal Francis George and his six auxiliary bishops officially entered Illinois' gay marriage fray Tuesday, issuing a letter that urges parishioners to contact state legislators and voice opposition to a legalization bill that could face a vote this week.

    "Civil laws that establish 'same-sex marriage' create a legal fiction," George and the bishops wrote in a letter sent to priests Tuesday. "The state has no power to create something that nature itself tells us is impossible." [Read Full Story]


    Report: Roman Catholic Church Leadership Poured $2 Million Into Fight Against Marriage Equality

    While the results of this election represented a monumental victory in the fight for marriage equality, it turned out to be quite a costly one for the Catholic Church.

    During the election cycle, leaders of the Roman Catholic Church directed nearly $2 million toward campaigns against gay marriage in four states, according to a recent report from the Human Rights Campaign. Many of the contributions, derived from dioceses across the country, likely came from parishioners who had no knowledge of what the money would be used for, the HRC noted in a press release.     Vatican digs in after gay marriage advances in US, Europe; asks sarcastically why not polygamy

    VATICAN CITY — The Vatican is digging in after gay marriage initiatives scored big wins this week in the U.S. and Europe, vowing to never stop insisting that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

    In a front-page article in Saturday’s Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, the Holy See sought to frame itself as the lone voice of courage in opposing initiatives to give same-sex couples legal recognition. In a separate Vatican Radio editorial, the pope’s spokesman asked sarcastically why gay marriage proponents don’t now push for legal recognition for polygamous couples as well. [Read Full Story]

    Gay Catholic challenges Dolan to debate marriage

    Bishops to address gay marriage, abortion at fall meeting
