Catholic Notre Dame Announces Services for Gay Students

By Moni Basau, CNN - December 7, 2012

Mia Lillis knew that she was gay when she was 12. She felt lucky to attend a public high school in Austin, Texas, that was highly supportive and had a gay student alliance. Then she arrived at the University of Notre Dame.

She enrolled there because Notre Dame's reputation as a premier Catholic school appealed to her family. But from the very first day, Lillis was scared.

She searched for a gay and lesbian student organization. There was none. She sought out literature for gay students. Again, nothing. [Read Full Story]

Research Note | Beyond Secular vs. Religious: Religious Divides in Support for Same-Sex Marriage

By Public Research Institute - Jan. 27, 2012

In 2011, majorities of most religious groups favored allowing gay and lesbian couple to marry legally, illustrating that the old narrative of battle lines between secular supporters and religious opponents no longer serves as an accurate characterization of the landscape of the same-sex marriage debate. In the general population, 2011 was also the first year on record in which supporting same-sex marriage was not a minority position. In May, several surveys (all asking slightly different versions of the same question) found that a majority of the public supported allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally marry. PRRI’s May survey found that 51% of Americans were in favor, and 43% were opposed.

By David Ashenfelter, Detroit Free Press - December 16, 2011

A Howell mother has sued her school district and a teacher for booting her son out of class last year because her son's religious beliefs prevented him from accepting homosexuality.

The Thomas More Law Center filed the suit Wednesday on behalf of Sandra Glowacki, a Catholic. It accuses the Howell Public School District and teacher Johnson (Jay) McDowell of violating her son's constitutional rights. [Read Full Story]

Faith Groups Campaign to Block Gay Marriage

    New York Times - May 5, 2011

    By Paul Vitello

Evangelical, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Jewish leaders, determined to head off momentum for same-sex marriage in Albany, say they are mobilizing an extensive campaign to block legislation that would make New York the sixth state to allow gay men and lesbians to wed.

“Our pastors are fired up by the governor’s assault on marriage,” said the Rev. Jason J. McGuire, executive director of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, a lobbying group that represents evangelical churches in the state. “We’re already in gear.”

Opponents of same-sex marriage have already financed a wave of 500,000 automated calls urging voters to contact undecided lawmakers. And the traditional religious coalition that has fought same-sex marriage in previous legislative sessions now counts among its members Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan, who played only a muted role the last time the issue was debated, in 2009, when he had just been appointed to lead the Catholic Archdiocese of New York. [Read Full Story]
