    Gay Seminarian Leaves Methodist Denomination to be Ordained

    As soon as Michael Overman announced that he was gay, the Southern Baptist church that raised him, led him to attend an evangelical Christian college and inspired him to pursue ministry left him feeling abandoned.

    He stayed estranged from Christianity for about six years before eventually finding his way to Holy Covenant United Methodist Church, a congregation in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood that welcomes gays and lesbians. [Read Full Story]

    Park Ridge church becomes ‘reconciling congregation,’ welcomes LGBT community

    Members of a Park Ridge congregation this month took a formal and, some would say, bold step toward an increased level of acceptance by the church.

    The membership of First United Methodist Church, 418 W. Touhy Ave., voted Jan. 8 to become a “reconciling congregation,” establishing the church as one that welcomes homosexual, bisexual and transgender people for worship. [Read Full Story]


    Church Nativity scene with gay figures vandalized

    CLAREMONT, Calif. (AP) — Vandalism of a church's Nativity display that includes depictions of gay and lesbian couples was being investigated as a hate crime, police said.

    The damage at Claremont United Methodist Church occurred late Saturday or Sunday morning.

    The display's three panels feature silhouettes of three hand-holding couples — two men, two women and a heterosexual pair. The vandal knocked over the depictions of the gay and lesbian couples but left the straight couple alone. [Read Full Story]


    Methodist clergy face discipline over gay unions

    The Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church says it will continue to enforce church rules against clergy officiating at same-sex unions.

    The bishops announced their plan Thursday in response to petitions signed by more than a thousand clergy pledging to defy the ban and officiate at same-gender ceremonies.

    The United Methodist Book of Discipline considers gay relationships "incompatible with Christian teaching." Clergy who officiate at the ceremonies can receive a range of punishments, including suspension or defrocking. [Read Full Story]
