    Gay clergy row threatens mass resignations from Church of Scotland

    The Church of Scotland is braced for mass resignations over moves to allow the ordination of gay ministers, with up to 150 conservative and evangelical ministers threatening to quit, the Guardian can reveal.

    The rebellion began after the Church of Scotland became the first major presbyterian church in the world to allow openly gay and lesbian ministers to take up parishes at its general assembly in May, despite evidence that 20% of its elders and office-bearers could leave in protest.

    The assembly also opened the way for the full ordination of gay ministers in the 450-year-old church within two years. [Read Full Story]

    Irish church 'alarm' over gay clergy

    The Presbyterian Church in Ireland has expressed concern at the Church of Scotland's handling of the issue of homosexual clergy.

    Last month the Scottish Church voted to allow its ministers who were ordained before May 20, 2009 and who are now openly gay to be appointed by congregations. The Church has also created a commission to consider the justification of the future ordination of gay ministers. [Read Full Story]

    Walnut Creek church considers breakoff over gay clergy issue

    With heads bowed in prayer one recent Sunday morning, those in the pews at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church sang a hymn praising God for being "slow to chide and quick to bless."

    Immediately following that service, most of the nearly 200 worshipers present stayed for a meeting to discuss an internal judicial action -- akin to a lawsuit against their own overseeing organization -- to legally block the ordination of a gay woman by the San Francisco Presbytery.     Falls Church Presbyterian Pastor Hails End of Ban on Openly Gay Clergy

    Earlier this month, the national Presbyterian Church approved a change in its constitution to allow openly gay church members to serve as ministers and church leaders. It is a change that one local church pastor says has been a long time coming.
